Brainstorm: A New Book that is a Must Read

Dr. Dan Siegel, clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine, on faculty of the Center for Culture, Brain, and Development and co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center, has written a new book called: Brainstorm: The Power and Purpose of the Teenage Brain. It will be available for purchase on January 7.

This is an important reevaluation of adolescence in our society. Dr. Seigel said of the book, “Recent research has illuminated how brain development impacts teenagers’ lives, but much of what is commonly understood offers a very different and often despairing picture.  In Brainstorm I explore the important ways we might debunk these myths and reveal the truths about how we can help adolescents to celebrate what can, in fact, be an incredibly positive period of growth and to minimize any loneliness, misunderstanding, and distress on either side of the generational divide.”

Dr. Siegel describes how parents and teens might work together to form a “deeper understanding of the brain science behind all the tumult,” so that together, we can turn what can be rebellion and teenage/adult conflict into a time of deeper understanding between parents and teens.

The teen and young adult years are often a roller coaster of emotions and hormones, but it does not need to be a time of loneliness, confusion, or fear. Parents can encourage teenagers and use this time of life to help their growth and learning in positive ways that are less stressful for everyone.

It is possible to parent your children away from addiction. In this insightful book, you will learn from one of the world’s leading psychiatrists how to make the teenage years less volatile for you and your children – and hopefully set them up for a successful, healthy life.
